Often we find ourselves in everyday moments, where things feel mundane and almost boring. The daily grind of life, when you’re waiting at traffic, waiting on your food to be delivered… The little moments of everyday life that almost seems insignificant.
But what if we can make those unremarkable everyday moments into something more? Something special, even. What if we can turn our everyday moments into Jesus moments? This is the idea that Ps Denis and Ps Hai Eng would like to impart in this October’s message. There are little steps we can take in our day-to-day routines that can help us change these everyday moments.
Turn Waiting Time into Jesus Time
Let’s take for an example, that you’re waiting for your daily order of caffeine at a coffee shop. You already are in conversation with the waiter or the cashier as part of your everyday moment. However, you can take the next step and open up the room for more conversations with a simple question, “How are you?” More often that not, this simple question leads into a deeper conversation, and maybe even present an opening to introduce someone to Jesus somewhere down the line! Suddenly a simple everyday conversation becomes a connection that leads to salvation. How great is that?
Ps Denis adds to this notion of changing your waiting time by sharing about his habit of bringing a notebook with him wherever he goes. Instead of picking up his phone while waiting, he picks up his notebook, which he has filled with Bible verses, names of those he is praying for, quotes that speak to him and etc. Now the quiet moment that most of us lose on our screens becomes a quiet moment of prayer or meditation on the Word. Maybe it’s time we all start having little notes like that on us at all times too.
Turn Encounters into Encouragements
Another way we can turn our everyday moments into Jesus moments is by how we interact with the people in our social circle. Think about it, the people we encounter at our workplaces, food courts, class rooms, or even ministry places. All the colleagues, employees, superiors, friends… Now how if we turn these encounters into moments of encouragements? Tell someone how you appreciate them and how you think they are doing great or how they can improve.
Ps Hai Eng adds by mentioning a delightful trait of Ps Denis, where she often finds him texting people to encourage them, especially after events. He often reaches out to encourage them with the Word of God and it is something that we can all strive for. The idea is that to whoever you meet, you are turning those everyday moments into inserts of encouragement for them.
Turn Frustrations into Surrender
Something else we can consider is in moments of frustration or stress. Now, this is definitely not pleasant, but it is a common occurrence for all of us. It is these moments that we could turn into moments of surrendering unto Jesus.
As an example, Ps Hai Eng mentions a recent stressful event that occurred in their lives. On a long trip back, Ps Denis mentioned that he was tired, so Ps Hai Eng took over driving for a while. Little did she know that she was equally as tired, and lo and behold, she was beginning to fall asleep behind the wheel. The car began to veer in the other direction onto oncoming traffic. Suddenly Ps Denis woke up from his sleep, and asked Ps Hai Eng, “What are you doing, dear?”, snapping her back into the moment when she realized that there was a lorry coming on the other side of the road and that they could have been in a head on collision. She soon parked the car at the side after that and Ps Denis took over the wheel for a while.
That night, Ps Hai Eng shares that she told the Lord she doesn’t want any trauma from the incident. With the faith that what happened was a moment allowed by God, Ps Hai Eng had the realization that it was God that preserved her life, and He has something more for her in life. This drove her to make a change after the incident. Despite not enjoying being on stage or in front of an audience, Ps Hai Eng decided to take the step and surrendered her life to God. “I may not have much, but I’m willing to give it a go,” she said as she decided to let herself be a vessel for God, to be used for His work.
This has led to wonderful moments in their ministry. Ps Denis shares how in their recent trip to HIM Australia churches, Ps Hai Eng has been sharing alongside him on stage, which has been an incredible experience all around. The near death experience was turned into a positive moment for Ps Hai Eng because she surrendered to God, and it was such a meaningful impact for Ps Denis too!
When you really look at it, what all of this leads to is how we can transform lives everywhere. It begins with making the conscious decision to turn our everyday moments into Jesus moments. So now it is our turn. It starts with a single moment, and it can impact the world beyond what we thought was even possible. For with God, nothing is impossible!
