We have been focusing on “Strengthen to Saturate” throughout this year as the theme for our movement. The call is to transform lives wherever we are, strengthening either on a personal level or on a community level. We can make a difference in the lives of those around us, by sharing our lives as living testimonies in His grace. It is through this that we believe we can saturate our churches, our communities, even our nation for Christ.
In this message, Ps Wilson raises a question that changes the way we answer our call in Christ. What if it’s not just about reaching out and mentoring in the space around us? What if the call is also to make an impact across time?
Suddenly, there is a whole other dimension to our work in Christ, but the question remains… How do we do this? And the answer is simple.
GENERATIONS!
A mission that transcends generations
Our God is a God of generations! God has never worked by focusing on just one generation. His mission, which is to redeem humanity and to grow and build His church, has always stretched across generations, cultures, and family lines over the centuries. His faithfulness is really seen in all His promises that are kept from generation to generation. God’s plan for us transcends generations, just as well as His purpose for us to make an impact across generations.
When Ps Wilson uses the term “generation”, he refers to both the natural and spiritual definitions of the word. God’s mission here is not just for the fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, but also mentors and mentees. It is for every one of us. Each generation must grasp this truth, that God’s mission is bigger than all of us. It’s bigger than our moment here, our history, our ministry, and even our lifetime. So we are called to build beyond ourselves, to shape generations that will go forth and carry God’s mission until Jesus returns.
Wouldn’t you agree that this changes everything? It shifts our perspectives, breaking the trap of our short-term thinking. It forces us to ask the question, “What are we building that will outlive us?” History shows that often when this truth is forgotten, families begin to drift, churches lose their edge, and the mission becomes diluted. But when generations stay aligned with God’s purpose, then His work will expand.
One generation building the next
Now that we know God’s mission for us transcends generations, what do we do? This is where we need to continue the work, to build upon God’s work from one generation to the next. If we look at Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, God did not restart His plan with every fresh generation. In fact, He advanced it. He layered upon it. He built a nation progressively through each generation.
God intends to build His church the same way. Not by resetting in every generation, but by raising legacies that a generation can pass on to the next generation, and the next generation can then stand upon it and build upon it. We see this in family dynasties, where one generation pioneers, the next expands upon it, and the following generation strengthens it. If this truth is practiced in these settings, how much more should this be done in the Kingdom of God?
So, how do we do this? This is where mentorship plays a huge role. Let’s take the younger ones under our wings. Let’s mentor them, guide them, and encourage them. Let us be intentional and help mold their hearts, with knowledge and skill for the mission God has prepared for them.
Hearts need to be filled with faith, a mission and a passion for God. Their faith will grow when our faith journey becomes a testimony. Their mission, just like ours, must always stay anchored in the Great Commission, because anything else will dilute God’s mandate. Passion, on the other hand, is always caught, it’s not taught. So we need to expose them to other passionate believers. Knowledge grows when we nurture a hunger to learn. Whether it’s biblical, practical, spiritual, or in leadership areas, we should point them to greater opportunities. We should offer them opportunities to tap into more resources and environments that will stretch them.
Ps Wilson continues by sharing memories of his father, a man who has always been eager to learn more and to apply what he’s learned. This led to sparking the same hunger in Ps Wilson, a desire to learn and grow himself. The skill of learning is something that comes with practice. Therefore, it is important to create the opportunities for practice in the church. Give the younger ones real ministry experience, and lead them into taking more responsibilities. They need to try (and fail sometimes), and that is how they can grow and rise into the fullness of the purpose God has for them.
When generations align in mission
All that said, God’s work is never meant to be shouldered by one generation alone. His desire has always been for intergenerational partnership. We can see this pattern in the Scriptures clearly, between Moses and Joshua, Elijah and Elisha, Paul and Timothy, and many others. Fruitful relationships are built upon humility, honor, and the shared mission. In every pair, it reveals the power of generations when they are aligned together for God’s call.
When generations work together, God’s mission can gain greater momentum. The older generation can bring perspective, wisdom, and depth, while the younger generation can bring passion, innovation, and fresh energy. One generation can carry the flame and the next can fan it even brighter. Neither generation can really advance God’s kingdom all by itself. We need one another!
We are one family under God
The flame will burn brightest when every generation carries it together. After all, we are all on one mission, as a family. So let’s build bridges, not barriers. Let’s grow God’s work in a way that will outlive us and give Him all the glory. The same God who had begun the work in you is already raising a new generation to advance it further. This is how the Kingdom of God will move forward, from the faithfulness of one generation to the fruitfulness of another.
